File Management in Guitar Pro 8
This section describes the available methods for creating, opening, saving, importing, exporting, and managing score files in Guitar Pro.
Opening a File
There are several ways to open a file in Guitar Pro:
Double-clicking a .gp file
If the file is in Guitar Pro format (such as .gp, .gp5, .gpx), a simple double-click will open it directly in Guitar Pro. These files are always associated with the software on your computer. Other formats like MusicXML may not be associated by default, but you can link them to Guitar Pro if desired.Drag and drop

- From the File menu
You can access all file-related options from the File menu.
Creating a New File
File > New
Creates a blank file. A blank file contains no track by default, but you will be prompted to add one when creating it.File > New from Template
Lets you start from a predefined template that already includes tracks, instruments, effects, and ready-to-use sounds. These templates make it easier to create projects based on different musical styles.

File > Save as Template
You can save a personal project as a template to find it later in this list.
Managing Open Files
File > Open…
Allows you to browse your computer to select an existing file.File > Open Example
Provides direct access to demo scores included in Guitar Pro.File > Return to Score
Lets you exit the Explorer window and return to the score you are editing.File > Close
Closes the active tab.File > Close All
Closes all open file tabs in the session.
Saving
File > Save
Saves the latest changes to the current file.File > Save As…
Lets you save the file to a different location or under a different name.
Import and Export
- File > Import
Allows you to open files from other compatible formats:
MIDI, MusicXML, ASCII, TablEdit, PowerTab.

- File > Export
You can export a score to various formats:
GPX, GP5, MIDI, ASCII, MusicXML, PDF, SVG, PNG, audio.

- File > Batch Converter
Tool that allows you to convert multiple files from one Guitar Pro format to another in a single operation.

Other Options
File > Open File Folder
Opens the file’s location on your computer in the file explorer.File > Print
Launches a print of the current score.

- File > Lock / Unlock
Allows you to protect a score from modifications.

- File > Stylesheet
Access to many layout parameters for your scores.
