They got labeled as grunge just because they played hard rock and came from Seattle in the late eighties, but Soundgarden’s sound has little if nothing to do with Nirvana or Pearl Jam. In fact, their heavy riffs in open tuning and odd meters made them more akin to Led Zeppelin. Led by singer Chris Cornell and the highly creative guitarist Kim Thayil, their masterpiece remains the 1994 album Superunknown which includes the timeless single Black Hole Sun.
